项目摘要

今年度は、横光利一文学会で研究発表１本を行なった。以下、その梗概を述べる。横光利一の長編小説『紋章』（『改造』1934.1~9）には、魚醤の醸造に没頭する発明家の雁金八郎という人物が登場する。従来、雁金は広義の科学者として造型されていたことから、この時期の横光の「科学」観を推し量る手がかりのひとつとされていた。しかし、同時に眼を留めておきたいのは、雁金はアカデミックな学術機関に所属する専門研究者であったわけではなく、ごく私的な発明の動機に突き動かされるアマチュアの職業技術者として設定されていた点である。そこには、最先端の理論的成果よりもむしろ日常生活に根ざした次元に〝科学的なもの〟の発露を読み取ろうという、この時期の横光の方法意識が投射されている。それは、同時代において知識人の役割が、思弁的な内省から日常世界の探究へと向かい、さらに三〇年代後半にプラグマティックな技術統治の担い手へと変容していったことと無関係ではない。『紋章』で展開された内省する知識人としての山下久内と、行動する技術者としての雁金の対比構造は、こうした思想史的文脈からその意味をとらえなおすことができる。併せて重要なのは、『紋章』において、私人としての雁金が公人としての社会的使命を自覚するまでの筋立てが、冒頭から「日本精神」の発露という仕方で語られていたことである。雁金の発明行為の最終的な帰結として、国家事業への有用性という価値尺度が措定されたとき、結果的にその描かれ方は、おのずと先述したような職業技術者の社会参画やテクノクラートの台頭といった時勢と重ね合わされることにもなるだろう。そこに、戦時下における横光の行き過ぎたナショナリズムの萌芽をも見いだすことができる。そのような横光の文学活動における結節点として『紋章』を位置づけた。発表内容は、すでに来年度に査読付雑誌への掲載が決定している。
