本研究の目的は、マテリアル・エコクリティシズムの観点からトニ・モリスンの文学を体系的に読み解き、モリスンの環境思想に対する研究の射程を広げ、その理論的位置づけを明らかにすることだった。当該年度は、トニ・モリスンの第1作『青い眼が欲しい』（The Bluest Eye 1970）から最新作『神よ、あの子を守り給え』（God Help the Child 2015）までの全11作品を研究対象としてテクスト分析を行い、各作品に描かれる具体的な物質を抽出して、与えられている意味を共時的に考察する作業を行った。その結果、トニ・モリスンの作品における物質が複数の意味や機能・効果を重ね書きされているさまを明らかにすることができた。例えば、『神よ、あの子を守り給え』におけるイヤリングは、登場人物の1人であるブライドの身体を商品化させるために一役買うと同時に、ジェリの忠告を無視することで男性の視点に基づく美の定義に抵抗する意味を持つ。さらに、ブライド、クイーン、ソフィアなど、複数の登場人物を関連付けながら、母娘関係のテーマを多層的に描くための装置として機能している。さらに、トニ・モリスンの作品に描かれる物質が人間によって定められた意図や目的の範疇を超えて作用するさまや、人間が付与した意味からずれていくさまが描かれていることが明らかになった。『パラダイス』（Paradise 1997）における料理釜は、黒人たちが築き上げた楽園の象徴であったにもかかわらず、その楽園が生まれた背景にある排他性を皮肉にも再生産してしまう。また、モーガン家の祖先が後世に伝承すべく料理釜に刻み込んだ言葉は、その意図に反して世代間の乖離を露呈させ、共同体を分離させる働きを持つ。本研究の成果の一部をまとめ、日本アメリカ文学会（ALSJ）および黒人研究学会（JBSA）において口頭発表を行った。
