当初の研究計画では、奥会津や三遠南信地方での民俗調査を考えていたが、新型コロナウイルス感染拡大を受けて実施できなかった。そこで、考古資料の調査に多くの時間を割くことにした。まず、福井県鳥浜貝塚と長野県北村遺跡の磨石・石皿類を全て再精査し、事例検討を深めた。また岐阜県の飛騨市・高山市・揖斐川町、長野県の岡谷市・諏訪市・辰野町・宮田村・駒ケ根市・飯田市、福井県の勝山市・大野市・永平寺町・坂井市・鯖江市、愛知県の田原市・名古屋市・瀬戸市、三重県の松阪市・度会町、そのほか兵庫県、奈良県、和歌山県に所在する縄文時代の遺跡を対象に、出土している打製石斧、磨石・石皿類について半ば悉皆的な資料調査を実施した。ここまでの調査により、該当石器は遺跡内でも層位や地点によって異なる使用状況を示し、さらに遺跡間で分析結果を対照させることできめ細かな時期差や地域差を浮き彫りにできることが分かってきた。これには、第一に遺跡の立地環境や周辺植生といった生態学的条件、第二に土器型式圏に象徴される社会・文化的条件が反映されているものと思われる。また、礫石器に対しても型式学的な分析によって地域性や新旧関係を判別することが可能であるとの感触が得られた。この他、掘り棒や敲打具といった木製品の集成作業および実物にあたっての精査を進め、それらのなかには植物の採集や加工の場面で使用されたものがある可能性を見出した。また、わが国近世の古文献やカリフォルニア先住民に関する民族誌を調査・分析し、より古層の技術要素の把握およびその中緯度温帯域における特性の究明を進めた。植物の食料化技術についての基礎的研究、食料化関連道具の個別研究の双方を推進することができたので、以降で両者の統合をはかることとする。さらに、前年度までの調査をもとに執筆した3本の論文が審査を経て受理され、本年度において公表することができた。
