前年度に引きつづき６月まで研究室の交換留学制度を利用してリヨン高等師範学校に滞在した。ジョゼフ・ド・メーストルは18世紀と19世紀とを架橋する思想家であり、今年度はフランスにおける人的交流を通じて、18世紀研究の現在を参照できるよう準備を進めていた。ところが、周知のとおり2020年３月からの世界的な新型コロナウイルス感染症の流行により、フランスはロックダウンとなったため、当初行なう予定であった調査・研究はおろか、日常生活もままならない状態となった。フランスのロックダウンは５月中旬から徐々に緩和されたが、滞在期限である６月末までには日常生活も研究環境もほぼ復旧せぬまま帰国することとなり、せっかくの在外研究の機会を存分に生かすことができなかった。また日本においても、図書館の長期閉館などで参考文献の取り寄せが困難となっており、オンラインで参照できる論文等を使ってていたものの、研究は著しく遅滞した。かような状況のため、残念ながらジョゼフ・ド・メーストルに関する研究は思うように進まなかった。しかし今年度は、出版社からお声がけをいただいて、ジョゼフの弟であるグザヴィエ・ド・メーストル『部屋をめぐる旅』の翻訳を準備することとなった。この作品は、フランス革命のさなかに自室を旅するという旅行記形式で書かれた奇妙な随筆であり、昨年度には18世紀の旅行記と19世紀の旅文学を架橋する文学史的な位置づけについて論文も書いていた（刊行は今年度）が、日本ではほとんど知られていおらず、フランス語圏でもこれまであまり読まれてはいなかったようである。しかし部屋ごもりの期間が続く中で、時勢に適した本として紹介されているフランス語の記事を多く目にするようになった。そのような折に企画をいただいたので、翻訳とともに作家年譜と訳者解題を作成した。出版社の都合もあるが2021年度中には刊行できると思われる。
