2019 (平成31) 年4月6日、東京大学で研究会合を開催し、研究代表者による基調報告「古典文献研究と近代歴史科学 : 方法的連続と断絶」に続いて、今後の研究計画や方針について意見交換を行った。竹村は、江戸儒学や明治期の漢学を中心に日本思想史分野での研究成果を開陳し、大久保は、江戸期の考証学や蘭学が育んだ知見と近代的な学問方法論や近代史学との継承と断絶、方法的連関に関して、伊東は、清朝考証学の政治的・思想的な特質、江戸期の考証学や西欧の文献研究の方法との異同、比較研究の方向性について、各々知見を提供し合い、共有を試みた。11月9日・10日の両日、伊東が勤務先の日文研で主宰する共同研究会「比較のなかの東アジアの王権論と秩序構想」との共催での会合を国士舘大学で開催し、楠本文庫所蔵の稀覯史料の閲覧と調査を行った。楠本正継・九大名誉教授の寄贈による同文庫は、江戸儒学や漢学などの分野の貴重な文献を数多く含んでいる。竹村と伊東は、日中の考証学や古典文献学の比較、近代的な歴史学の成立などに関して、適宜、意見交換や討論を行った。竹村は、英語圏を中心とする原史料調査を実施する準備として、研究協力者のB. A. Elman (プリンストン大学)、A. Grafton (同前)、C. Guthenke (オックスフォード大学)の各教授らと頻繁に連絡を取り合い、東西の古典研究の方法論的な比較研究を行う基盤や体勢を整えた。2020年の国際歴史科学協議会(CISH)を念頭にE. Tortarolo教授(トリノ大学)とも交流や連携を深めた。大久保は、英語圏に加えて、ライデン大学やフランス語圏での原史料調査のための準備を進める傍ら、18～19世紀における東西の知の環流をめぐって、特にオランダと日本との間での学術交流に関して、伊東は、清朝考証学に見られる実証主義的な文献研究の方法論をめぐって、江戸期の考証学との共時性と両者の異同について、更に近代的な学問方法論や歴史学への接続や継承と相互の差異に関して、各自の知見を公表した。

本科研費研究は、上記の如く、当初の予定であった、3年間の展開に向けて、研究代表者である、竹村英二・国士舘大学教授をはじめとして、鋭意、研究はもとより、国際学会への参加や海外の研究協力者との接触による、在外調査の準備などを進めていたが、大変残念な仕儀ながら、研究代表者の竹村教授が、2020(令和2)年2月15日を以て、予て闘病の末、急逝されたため、当日を以て、執行停止となり、中止を余儀なくされた。なお、研究分担者である、大久保と伊東の両名は、竹村教授の遺志を継いで、本科研費研究の後継となる、何らかの科研費研
