本課題は、オディロン・ルドンの作品の不明瞭さが喚起する非決定的な態度の要因を探り、19世紀フランスおよびフランスとかかわった国々におよぶ芸術の起源と影響について考察するものである。2022年度は現地調査を実施し、おもに以下の①と②を行った。①通常見過ごされてしまう滲みや下がきのような線を含む表象について考察を進めた。1908年に描かれた織物下絵は画家の社会的認知を象徴する作品と捉えられてきたが、日本趣味、実在の花と想像の花、東西の植物、写実的描写と抽象形態を混ぜた折衷的表現が認められる。公文書および書簡と照らし合わせると、 前衛的評価を冷静に受け止め、公的な審査に対して慎重にふるまった試行錯誤を読み取ることができる。反復する花びらや蔓を中心とする装飾的構図と、目の粗いカンヴァスに絵具の濃淡で立体感を強調した手法には、ペルシャやフランドルの織物とフランスの伝統を結びつけようとした試みがあらわれている。「研究開始時の研究の概要」１）と２）にかかわるこの成果は『三菱一号館美術館研究紀要』第5号に掲載された。②最新のルドン研究の主たる方向性は史料の分析にもとづく実証的な考察にある。報告者は書簡、画家の手稿など2022年に刊行された新史料を入手し、フランスの図書館やカルナヴァレ美術館などで文字史料と図像を収集した。これをもとに《出現》（1883年）などに描かれた「頭部」の図像分析を進めた。隠蔽と露呈を交錯させる手法で重層化された複数のイメージには、文学的源泉からの自立、抽象美術の兆候、美術市場向けの戦略のほかに、処刑制度をめぐる議論、神経疾患治療の遅れ、身元不明の死者の展示など生々しい社会現象に対する断定的でない態度と、憧れと嫌悪が入り混じった死生観を読み取ることができる。「都市文化研究フォーラム」（2月24日）および「研究雑談会」（3月16日）で発表し、現在、論文化の途上にある。
