ゲルマン祖語あるいは古英語も含むゲルマン諸語の強変化動詞の活用体系の形態（音韻）的特徴が印欧祖語の動詞体系からどのようなメカニズムで発達したか、これまでの研究では必ずしも十分な成果を得られないで来た。ゲルマン祖語の強変化過去の形態は、印欧祖語の完了形を受け継いだ形であるというのが多くの学者が依る定説であると言えるが、その立場から（のみ）では十分に説明できない現象が多々見られる。次のような現象である：強変化I-III類の過去複数形は、語根末の無声摩擦音がある場合、その摩擦音は通常ヴェルナーの法則で有声化されるものの、ヴェルナーの法則による有声化を受けない例が少数ながらあるのは、なぜか。強変化IV, V類の過去複数形に見られる語根の長母音はどこから来たか。（従来唱えられていたような、畳音と語根の縮約に由来するならば、語根末の無声摩擦音は有声化されるはずであるが、有声化されない例が多々見られるのはなぜか。）強変化第VI類の過去単数、過去複数形の長母音は何に由来するか。ゴート語強変化VII類動詞では、多くの場合母音交替が見られないが、これはなぜか。このような現状の中で、これまでに私は形態的混交理論（morphological conflation theory）の立場から、過去現在動詞、強変化I-III類動詞、強変化IV, V 類動詞の形態（音韻）的特徴がどのようにして発達したのかを説明する図式を構築してきた。これらの成果を受けて、強変化VI類動詞、そして強変化VII類動詞の形態（音韻）的特徴がどのようなメカニズムで発達したかについても、説得力ある説明を試みることが、本研究の目的である。
