本研究の目的は、18世紀後半に西欧諸国の中でも特にロシアとイギリスが鎖国体制下の日本に対し、外交・貿易面でどのような政策をとろうとしたか、また日本に関してどのような関心を抱いていたかについて、在外資料の研究をもとに明らかにすることである。令和４年度は海外の研究機関に保管されている資料調査のためにイギリスに渡航し、在外資料を閲覧し、資料や情報を収集することができた。この在外資料調査により、令和３年度に画像資料の分析をもとに発表した論文では論じることができなかった、画像のみからは得られない情報を入手することができた。また関連文書を実際に閲覧することで、多くの新情報を得た。これらの情報には管見の限り未発表資料も含まれていた。これらの資料を文献等と照らし合わせて検討し、その研究結果を令和５年度には論文として投稿する予定である。令和４年９月には、ベルギーで開催された第１０回ヨーロッパ科学史学会に参加し、成果の一部を発表した。令和４年度も国際日本文化研究センターの共同研究員として共同研究「西洋における日本観の形成と展開」（研究代表者フレデリック・クレインス教授）に参加した。2022年10月29日に開催された第5回共同研究会において、本研究の成果の一部を「18世紀末の英国資料が示す大黒屋光太夫情報と日本観」と題し、発表した。令和５年１１月にはフランスで開催される国際学会で本研究の成果の一部を発表する予定である。
