仙台藩では17世紀～18世紀前半にかけて士庶（＝武士と庶民）の身分的・社会的な区別が明確になったが、18世紀後半以降、日常的な士庶混淆状況が見られるようになり、身分秩序の紊乱と武士の威厳の低下現象が惹起されてしまう。本研究は、こうした士庶混淆状況が同藩固有の問題なのかどうかを列島規模で確認し、百姓・町人らが武士を見る眼差しの変化について明らかにするため、仙台藩に見られたような士庶混淆状況と「侍の威」の低下現象を全国規模で確認し、その概要把握を行うとともに（課題①）、できるだけ多くの藩について個別具体的な検討を行い、仙台藩と相互に比較研究することを最終的な課題（課題②）としており、また、仙台藩における士庶混淆状況をもたらした歴史的要因についての全容解明も課題の一つ（課題③）としている。4年目にあたる令和4年度については、専ら課題③に関する作業を行った。その結果、以下のような成果を得ることができた。仙台藩を対象とする従来の研究では、天明の飢饉による難局を乗り切るため大勢の藩士たちが在郷へと移住したことが指摘されてきたが、本来、藩士たちは家計が窮乏したからといって勝手に在郷移住できたわけではない。そこで、大勢の藩士たちが長期にわたり在郷居住できた理由について藩の政策を通時的に追いかけた結果、同藩では藩財政の悪化を受け在郷居住を含む「勤方」の「御用捨」と旧例への回帰を命ずる法令が交互に幕末まで何度も出されていたこと、「勤方」をめぐる藩の方針が二転三転するなか、村に住む藩士たちの存在が藩の郡村支配に差し障りをもたらしたことから、文政年間を境に仙台城下へと戻らせる「定仙」命令や「定仙」奨励令が出されたが功を奏さず、在郷居住が一般化したことが判明した。また、他藩の状況を探った結果、多くの藩士たちが城下町を離れ在郷に住んでいるという状況は仙台藩特有の状況というわけではないこともわかった。
