新しい近世武家社会像の構築を目指し、従来スポットの当たらなかった身分制下の「個」というものに着目しそこから当時の武家社会像を描き出すこと、それを踏まえて「家」論を展開することを課題に研究を続けてきた。具体的には、仙台藩の武家を対象に、「身分格式をめぐる問題」、「儀礼をめぐる問題」、「名前をめぐる問題」といった三つのテーマについて取り上げ、その実証的研究成果をいくつかの個別論文にまとめ随時公表してきた。平成15年度は未発表論文に加筆・修正を施し、「近世武家社会における実名敬避俗と禁字法令」と題して学術雑誌に発表することができた。そこでは、近世武家社会における実名敬避慣行とその法令化を取り上げており、仙台藩が家中の実名(諱)を対象として実施した禁字法令の創出過程とその歴史的背景を明らかにしている。藩土たちの家譜を素材に、同藩門閥層の歴代家長が名乗った実名(諱)漢字を一字ずつチェックし表化することで、禁字法令が単に近世初頭からの慣習を成文化したものではなく新たに創出されたものであることを確認した上で、その形成過程や法令の内容について考察している。また、同論文で取り上げたテーマを他地域の事例と比較検討し日本近世社会特有の問題として普遍化するため、藩法研究会編『藩法集1〜12』(創文社、1959〜1975年)などを使い、全国諸藩の禁字法令・同名禁止令について大凡の把握を試みた。ただし、法令の成立時期・成立過程や主従関係・藩主権力と家臣との関係あるいは民衆への布達の有無など、具体的な法令の内容分析に入る前に確認すべき事柄は多く存在しており、個別藩ごとの状況を逐一押さえていく作業が必要であるものの、本格的な考察は今後の課題として残さざるを得ず、来年度以降に新稿としてまとめることができればと考えている。
