当該年度もコロナ禍の影響により、実施予定の研究のほとんどが実施できない状況となった。とくに、上島町教育委員会による上島町島尻遺跡の発掘調査がコロナ禍により延期になったことにより、当該地域の地形環境や試料採取と分析も延期とした。東アジアとくに中国の東シナ海沿岸部における浜堤（地形環境）と塩業遺跡に関する研究成果を公表した。東シナ海沿岸部では海岸地域でありながらも、地域によって原料に相違が見られる。山東半島や渤海沿岸では内陸部から地下水脈から流入する塩水（鹹水）を主に原料としている。いっぽう、東南中国沿岸部では海水利用が基本である。また東南中国沿岸部の塩業遺跡はおおむね浜堤に立地しており、地形環境に共通性があることが分かってきた。浜堤利用は浜堤の形成時期と関係があり、各地域・遺跡でのより精度の高い形成時期の分析が課題である。さらに東南中国沿岸部では貝灰などを含ませた粘土で塗り固めった「貝殻釜」と呼ばれる塩釜があり、華北などでは見られない地域性を示している。日本・九州沿岸部には竹などの木材を構造材として漆喰等で塗り固めて築く「あじろ釜」と呼ばれる塩釜があり、東南中国沿岸部の「貝殻釜」と製作方法等が類似する。「あじろ釜」は当該地域からの伝播により成立した可能性があることを指摘した。中国全土を見返したときに製塩の原料や技術は一様・一系統ではなく多種多様であることが言える。また、東南中国沿岸部の製塩遺跡の立地環境も日本の瀬戸内海等のそれとも類似していることからすると、伝播に関わるより比較の視点をもった研究が望まれる。
