観光振興のために作られた鳥瞰図は、地図情報としては正確さを欠く部分があるが、部分的な誇大や強調により実際の情景を写真的に表しているように見える。ここでは、描画されている地物の位置関係や投影法などを解析して数値標高モデルを用いた鳥瞰図を作成し、自然科学的な地形や地質の表現だけでなく、対象物の取捨選択について当時の状況や時代背景などの現代史・歴史地理学の知識を合わせて解析し、これらの図が持つ主張や意図を解読することを目標とする。「神奈川県鳥瞰図」では、表題の通り神奈川県全体を描いている。そこでは、横浜・川崎、三浦半島、丹沢、箱根などの特徴的な地形・地表面を、強調や歪みによって描いていることがコンピュータグラフィクス（CG）を使った再現の過程で分かってきた。令和４年度は神奈川県立歴史博物館にて特別展「地図最前線」を開催し、この中で「神奈川県鳥瞰図」について研究成果を展示し、図録に収録した。また、神奈川県立生命の星・地球博物館にて特別展「みどころ沢山！かながわの大地」にても、「神奈川県鳥瞰図」で描かれている範囲として小田原・箱根地域を取り上げ、紹介した。また、それぞれの館において一般県民向けに特別展関連講座として、鳥瞰図に関するテーマのものを開催した。内容としては、参加者自身にCGとして鳥瞰図を作成することで、アングル設定の難しさを体験する座学や、実際に絵図に描かれた場所に出向き、鳥瞰図や地図と比較する野外観察会などである。
