「独居高齢世帯」「夫婦のみ高齢世帯」が増加するなかで、要援護高齢者の在宅生活を維持するためには、「住民互助」の強化が不可欠である。本研究の目的は、地方中小自治体の地域特性を踏まえ、「生活支援活動」参加住民の量的拡大を可能とする「高齢者在宅生活支援システム」（課題発見システム／課題解決システム）の構築方法を定式化することで、「住民互助」の強化に貢献することにある。2022年度においては、コロナウィルス感染拡大予防の観点から、当初予定していた質問紙調査を次年度に延期することとし、調査項目の検討ならびにその分析視点の深化に資すると想定される「老いの受容」論に関する先行研究の整理を行った。「老いの受容」論とは、心身の能力低下に伴いIADLに支障を来していく高齢期において、これをどのように受容し精神的安定（幸福な老い）を維持するかを巡る議論である。わが国においては、急速な長寿化を背景とし高齢期における新たな役割の創出が必要とされたことから、1980～90年代にかけて、高齢期の「生産性」に注目する「活動理論」が有力となり「生涯現役社会」「一億総活躍社会」の実現等が政策的にも重視されてきた。しかし、「生産性」を過度に強調する弊害が指摘され、今日においては高齢期の「成熟性」に注目する「離脱理論」の流れを汲む「老いの受容」論に関心が集まるようになった。誰もがいずれ直面する以上、心身の衰えに直面した段階での精神的安定やその支援が必要であることは多言を要さないことから、今後は「生産性」のみならず「成熟性」をも包括した研究・政策・活動の展開が求められている。とくに、生活支援が必要な高齢者、即ち「生産性」から「成熟性」への移行段階にある高齢者を主対象とする本研究において、「老いの受容」論は、「高齢者在宅生活支援システム」の構築理念を検討する際に、有益な分析視点を提供するものと期待されるのである。
