本研究は、幼児期における自然教育の意義を「多様な生きものとの共存・共生」という視点から深く探求するとともに、「園庭の自然との出会いを創出する保育」の実現にむけた保育実践プログラムと教材の開発を目的としている。特に、子どもが自然と出会うためのインタフェースとしての「保育者」に注目するとともに、自然と出会うための入り口かつ妨げともなる「虫」の存在に注目している。追求する研究課題とそのプロセスは大きく以下の３つに分けられる。Ａ. 虫への苦手意識の緩和プロセスの解明、Ｂ. 保育者と子どもたちが園庭で共に学べる保育実践プログラムと教材の開発と評価、Ｃ. 虫との共存・共生意識尺度の開発。2022年度は、まずＡについては、保育者を対象とした質問紙調査から、保育者になった後に自然や環境問題についての理解が深まることが示された。また虫への苦手意識も軽減されることが示され、その要因として「虫好きの子ども」との出会いがあることが明らかになった。これらの結果をまとめて学会で報告した。Bについては、虫を入り口として自然と親しむ保育実践プログラムを実施した。横断的縦断的な調査から本プロブラムでの体験と学びによって、自然への知識や関心が育ち、子どもが虫と関わることの教育的意義についての認識が高くなることが示された。一方で、虫への苦手意識や嫌悪は比較的継続することが示された。Cについては尺度を作成し、調査を実施し、妥当性と信頼性を確認した。
