项目摘要

当該年度は、令和3年度に実施した発表を出版というかたちでまとめる作業をおこなってきた。これまで収集したアーカイブ資料を精査することで、修辞学に対する２人の関心の共通項を発見することができた。それまで「美学aesthetics」の範疇とされていた作品の特徴を社会との接点から読み解く中で、実際に教室で教える経験を通して修辞学を更新しつつ復活させようとしている。また彼らが、第二次世界大戦期のプロパガンダ研究への反省を踏まえた上で、これまでの人文学を総括するとともに、一般教育や言語教育における教授法を構築してきたことも確認できた。彼らの功績は、第二次世界大戦後のシカゴ大学やハーバード大学の一般教育に見ることができるが、それと同時に冷戦へと突入しつつある時期の各大学の学術的・政治的不和によって周縁に置かれることとなり、新批評が批判されるようになる流れの中で、文学史や文学批評史において無視されるようになってきたと言えるだろう。以上のような2人の知的関心のあり方と時代背景を考えると、彼らの功績を十全に評価することは、文学教育だけでなく人文学の発展に寄与することになるだろう。また一般教育と文学的読解や文章作成をすり合わせる彼らの試みは、戦後アメリカや日本における高等教育の成り立ちについて新たな視点を与えるだけでなく、現代日本における文学・言語教育を再活性化させる重要な手がかりとなるだろう。残念なことに、令和3年度もコロナ禍の影響による、海外渡航や施設の利用が制限され、BurkeとRichardsの関係をさらに深く明らかにすることができなかった。また発表を予定していた学会が中止されたため、研究内容について建設的な意見を交換できる機会が限定されてしまい、発表・出版業績としての成果にはつながらなかった。次年度はこの不足部分を補いつつ、着実に研究結果を残すようにする。
