鄭芝溶にとって日本は何だったのか。 この質問に対する答えは何層にも増して進められるが、何よりも詩人鄭芝溶の詩で日本がどのような意味を持ち、これは詩でどのように表れているのかを考える必要があるという問題意識のもと、この研究は京都留学時期の鄭芝溶の時に表れる日本の表象を見てみた。彼の詩で"日本"が表面に現れることはまれだが、日本留学中の滞在している日本という空間で、寂しさ、悲しみ、痛み、恐怖の感情が表れていることが把握できた。 家族と離れて一人で暮らすことに寂しさ、悲しみ、痛みを感じ、故郷とはあまりにも違う近代的な風景と視線の中で恐怖を感じた。 また母語ではなく外国語で勉強をする"家も国もない"植民地人として、恥じ入ることも率直に告白した。それでも"日本"という空間は詩を学べる空間であるため、このような否定的な感情を耐えなければならない所だった。 しかし、時に否定的な感情が募る時、話者は果たしてこれが価値あることなのか、再び故郷に"戻れるのか"を問い返すようになり、逆説的にこの苦悩を詩に昇華しようとした。 家も国もない植民地であり、他人の言葉を真似するような"パロット"として自らを位置させるが、日本も"偽西欧"であることに気づき、これを慰められるのは結局"詩"だと鄭芝溶は詩を通じて告白することになる。このように、この研究は鄭芝溶の京都留学時期に現れた"日本"の意味を探索することを通じて、この時期の鄭芝溶の創作の原動力を解明したといえる。
