2022年度は、提喩と換喩の連続性を明らかにするために、特に種による提喩に注目した。そこでは、メンタル・スペース理論に基づく、外延的なアプローチ（大田垣仁（2022）：「提喩性について-語用論的コネクターから提喩をみる-」『語文』（第116・117輯）で定式化）では、「提喩性」の正体を記述しきれないことが判明した。このアプローチによって、提喩を構成するカテゴリー関係についても、トリガー（実際の言語形式）とターゲット（指示対象や意味として話し手が意図しているもの）があり、これらの間に語用論的コネクターが生じることを発見した。これにより、隠喩や換喩と提喩との連続性と相違をカテゴリー配置の点で明示できたが、さらに提喩の語用論的コネクターそのものがどのような認知操作（認知的アルゴリズム）を持つものであるかはブラックボックスのままであった。したがって、2022年度は、提喩の認知操作を究明するために、関連研究の洗い直しを行った。つまり、認知意味論からのアプローチとしてWilliam Croftによるドメイン・ハイライティングの観点、関連性理論からのアプローチとしてRobyn Carstonによるアドホック概念構築の観点をみいだし、これらを批判的に検討することで、提喩性の正体が認知的なバイアスがかかったスケール操作にあるのではないか、ということにたどり着いた。この発見については、2022年度末に開催された金水研（放送大学）・岡﨑研（立命館大学）が主催した共同研究会で発表を行ったが。ここでは、スケール概念と、メンタル・スペース理論の主要概念のひとつであるブレンディング理論（概念統合理論）を用いて、種による提喩の発生条件について検討した。
