项目摘要

本年度の実績を四点にまとめる。今後の計画を考え、今回は主に「勧誘」表現の研究を扱い、語彙のみならず文章の構成にも着目した。第一に、文頭に立つ法助動詞の研究を継続した。前年度の報告にある、文頭の法助動詞が「勧誘」の解釈を持つ可能性を指摘した論文は海外の出版社より刊行された。この派生として、現代英語の法助動詞willの前身である中英語willenが一部の文献にて、文頭で「勧誘」を表す可能性があることを当該文献の構成に注目し調査した。第二に、古英語と中英語の「勧誘」表現Let we（+ 不定詞）という構造に目を向けた。古英語では「勧誘」の表現手段に(a) Uton + we + 不定詞、中英語では現代英語に残る(b) Let + us + 不定詞がある。両者は文頭の語彙（Uton/Let）と代名詞の語形（we/us）が異なる。ここでLet we（+ 不定詞）が「勧誘」表現の変遷史上、(a)と(b)の統語的な違いを埋める手段となる可能性を議論し、これを論文（近刊予定）にまとめた。第三に、古英語における話題の転換の文脈を調査した。文章中、ある話題が別のものへ変わることを表す手段には、Utonを用いた構造の他に文頭に本動詞または法助動詞を置く構造、また文頭の副詞Nu（現代語now）の次に定動詞または法助動詞が続く構造も見られる。これらの違いを調査し、この結果を国内学会にて発表した。今までよりも広い観点に立ち、こうした諸表現を一括して捉える視点を得ることができた。第四に、2020年度の研究をベースに、古英語と古高ドイツ語にて「奨励」（exhortation）を表す文献を精読し、この概念が持つ役割について比較を行った。両文献に関連する「主の祈り」や「裁きの日」といったテーマがどのように語られ、話者がどのように聴衆に向けて望ましい行いを勧めているかを分析した。
