本研究は、デリーのNGOが運営する児童養護施設「子どもの家」(仮名)で生活した経験のある若者の抱く家族のイメージと家族形成の実態を明らかにすることを目的としている。2022年8月と2023年3月にフィールドワークを行った。また、2023年2月に国際シンポジウム「「不確実性の時代」の南アジアの社会変動 ―若者の社会対応を通じて」において、「インド都市社会における社会的養護経験のある若者のアイデンティティ形成」と題した発表を行った。2022年8月は新型コロナウイルス感染拡大後3年ぶりのフィールドワークであったために、研究協力者である社会的養護を受けた経験のある「子どもの家」出身の若者たちのコロナ禍における生活実態について、支援をした／受けた経験を中心にインタビュー調査を行った。若者たちは収入が途絶えた間は貯金を切り崩しながら生活し、故郷に家族がいる場合には家族のもとで過ごしたり、結婚している場合には妻の親族のところに身を寄せたりした者もいた。なかには施設や施設出身者との関係が希薄/良好でない出身者もいるが、出身者の誰とも関係をもっていないという人は少なく、最も困窮した際には、出身者同士やNGOを通じて知り合ったボランティアといったインフォーマルな支援を頼っていた。しかし、NGOの食料支援など他の施設出身者に支援を受けたことが知られる可能性の高い場合、その利用を避ける事例というのが見られた。2023年3月の調査では、出身者の家族関係と職業生活についてインタビューや仕事の様子の観察を行った。2回の現地調査とその間に行った研究発表をふまえて、出身者の家族や施設出身者のネットワークを含めた社会関係に関する本科研の調査を通して得られたデータに基づき、社会的養護を受けた若者のアイデンティティ形成について論文化する予定である。
