本研究は東アジア諸地域における郷約・明清聖諭関係書の受容、及びそれに関する一連の庶民教化システムの成立・伝播・変貌の実態を明らかにするものである。2020年度の課題は①前年度まで行った近世日本民衆教化における郷約・明清聖諭展開の調査を継続すること、②植民地政策の一環としての郷約調査を行った韓国（植民地朝鮮）・台湾の郷約・明清聖諭展開について調査を行うことである。①について、まず、関東地方に新たに発見した郷約の存在について、武蔵・上総を中心に調査をおこない、藤城家の蔵書群を中心に考察を行った。次に伊予地方における郷約言説の展開について、近世大洲・伊予諸地にみられる陽明学の流行という文脈で当該地域の地方文書の読解作業を進めてきた。そして西日本における明清聖諭関係書の流通ルートをはっきりさせるために、小野藩近藤家の明清聖諭関係書印施を中心に調査・研究を行った。新型コロナの影響を受け、今年度は海外での調査を取り止め、②について朝鮮・台湾の植民地政策と親縁性のある近代沖縄を対象に調査を行った。奈良原繁による明治期沖縄教育における郷約・明清聖諭の活用について調査した。資格喪失により本研究が中止となるが、以下の成果を挙げられる。第一、近世日本の庶民教化を東アジアの文脈に位置づけた。つまり、近世日本の教化活動において、近世社会の末端までに明清王朝の聖諭が活用され、広く東アジアの民衆教化と共鳴したことを明らかにした。第二に、近世日本諸地域における郷約組織の形成と明清聖諭関係書の活用状況を、知識人・代官のネットワーク及び在村知識人の出版活動を通して明らかにした。寛政以降、庶民教化の現場に臨む各地の代官は、積極的に郷約を代表とする明清伝来の郷治理論を活用する傾向があることを解明した。複数の事例を提供し、教化言説の流動を追跡することにより道徳教化の形成過程の時代的普遍性を明確にした。
