The crotylation of carbonyls is an important process in organic chemistry and enables the access to building blocks for the total synthesis of natural products such as the large and highly important class of polyketides. An enantioselective ruthenium- or iridium-catalyzed hydrohydroxyalkylation of butadiene forming crotylation products was developed in the Krische group which led to a process with perfect atom economy. The current project will involve the transfer of this methodology to inexpensive, less toxic, iron- or cobalt-based catalysts. Thus, a by-product free, atom economical, environmentally benign, valuable method with a high attractivity for industrial applications will be developed.
