本研究では、介護老人保健施設を研究フィールドとし、認知症高齢者同士のコミュニケーションのあり方を直接観察し検討することを方法としている。そのため、本研究はコロナ禍の影響を多大に受け、研究の進捗は芳しくない状況が続いている。令和4年度においては、可能な限り、実地での観察を試みたが、度重なる感染拡大フェーズを受け、少しの進捗はあったが十分な研究結果を得ることはできなかった。そのため、研究期間の延長措置を申請し、実地での観察は令和5年度においても実施する予定である。令和4年度に観察できた限られた内容からは、認知症高齢者同士、互いの言語的会話の間（ま）や身体的距離、顔の向きなどの非言語的要素によって互いの関係性を構築しており、また社会的な関係として意識していることが伺われた。こうした結果は、認知症高齢者同士で言語的コミュニケーション能力が低下した状況であっても、対象がそれまで培った非言語的コミュニケーションによって潜在的に互いの社会性を維持し、関係構築に寄与している可能性が考えられた。令和5年度においては、データ収集を進め、分析していく予定である。一方で、認知症高齢者における非言語的コミュニケーションは、先行研究からも重要なコミュニケーション手段であると指摘されており、場合によっては認知症によって損なわれた言語的コミュニケーションを超える効果を持つとされていた。こうした先行研究の結果をまとめ、レビュー論文を作成中である。
