本研究は、がん患者の家族に対して死別前後の心理的問題を包括的にアセスメントし、それを支援に役立てていくことを目的としている。具体的には、東北大学病院緩和ケア外来を受診したがん患者の家族を対象とした心理教育（家族教室）を実施し、そこで研究同意の得られた参加者に対して複雑性悲嘆のリスク、および精神的健康度のアセスメントを実施する。その後、対象者にはあわせて郵送法による死別後のフォローアップ調査を実施し、がん患者家族の複雑性悲嘆の発現の有無、および精神的健康度のアセスメントを実施し、患者との死別前後における家族の心理的状態の比較検討を行うものである。2019年7月23日付で東北大学医学系研究科の倫理審査で承認された。家族教室実施に向け、外来担当医師向けの説明会等の準備を行った。また、家族教室の運用、複雑性悲嘆や精神的健康度の評価等、本研究に必要な情報収集を目的に国内の学会や国際学会に参加し、最新の知見の獲得を行いつつ多くの研究者との間で有益な情報交換を行った。2019年10月から実際の外来家族教室を施行した。家族教室参加者は、全員が東北大学病院緩和ケア病棟への入棟目的に紹介された患者の配偶者や子供であった。緩和医療科医師、精神科医師、臨床心理士が1回約60分の時間内で、患者家族の有する悩みや辛さを聞き取りながら、家族が現在感じている気持ちの辛さについて傾聴しつつ、解決につながるアドバイスを行った。そのうえで本研究の趣旨を説明させていただき、協力が得られた方々に同意をいただいたのち、調査票への記入を依頼した。2020年3月の時点で15名の家族に教室への参加と調査票の回収が可能となった。しかしながら、2020年4月以降外来家族教室は新型コロナ感染症の感染拡大予防のため、外来診療の制限下で行わざるを得ない状況となり、新規の外来家族教室開催不能状況が2023年3月現在も継続している。
