The Research Training Group promotes scientific excellence by educating selected M.D./Ph.D. students from the basic and medical sciences by an internationally renowned faculty. Over the period of three years, the students engage in cutting edge research projects investigating the (patho)physiology of the lung in the interface of basic sciences and clinical medicine. Particular emphasis is put on the discovery of molecular mechanisms underlying diseases of the respiratory system that are potentially applicable to the development of new therapeutic strategies. The programme understands itself as a modern scientific career centre preparing its successful graduates for competitive careers in biomedical research in academia, industry, or related businesses. The educational foundation of this programme offers a broad range of theoretical knowledge and transferable methodological skills. At a very early stage of their scientific career, the students become independent in planning and conducting their research work with the aim of instilling confidence to present their findings in spoken and written reports (talks, publications, grant applications). The philosophy of the programme highly values interdisciplinary cooperations within the scientific community; it introduces research management strategies and transports teamwork skills in academic medicine.
