This project will edit and study two exegetical lectures of Friedrich Schleiermacher on Paul and John. These will broaden and compliment the current understanding of Schleiermacher in a major manner. About half of the near one hundred and fifty lectures, which he held at the universities of Halle an der Saale and Berlin between 1804 and 1834, are on the New Testament and its interpretation. The writings of the New Testament are foundational for his understanding of Christianity. Until now the corresponding lectures have not been available for research, even in the original edition of the Sämmtliche Werke. Friedrich Schleiermacher is associated with a groundbreaking new conception of religion, especially of Christianity. According to this new theory Religion has a limited but vital role to play in modern society. Religious experience is the key entrance point for understanding this function. The question is how for Schleiermacher modern religion is linked to its biblical roots. Hence it is of central concern to explore his hermeneutical and exegetical praxis. The aim of this undertaking is to make two exemplary lectures accessible and to discuss their significance. His lectures on the letters of Paul and the gospel of John are poignant examples of his interaction with the New Testament because he viewed these writings as particularly influential in the development of early Christianity. This project will study the relevance of these lectures in the context of the other works of Friedrich Schleiermacher in the form possible dissertations, conferences and articles.
