本研究の目標は,イメージ体験過程の構造と,そのような構造をもたらすメカニズムを明らかにし,イメージ処理過程に関する総合的なモデルを構築することである。平成13年度の研究では,プライミングの手法を用いることによって,類知覚的情報と情動的情報の同時存在性,および両者の関係性について実験的に検討し,プライム試行においてイメージの類知覚的側面のみを喚起するような実験操作を行っても,情動的側面も随伴して喚起され,後続のプローブ試行における情動的判断に影響を与えることが示唆された。このことから,少なくとも両側面はイメージ体験において同時に存在していることが実証的に示された。また,平成12年度の調査研究によって,イメージ体験では類知覚的側面と情動的側面の間に相互作用があり,その結果として,イメージ体験の現実感が生じるらしいことが示唆された。そこで,平成14年度の研究では,イメージ体験の現実感が,本当に類知覚的側面と情動的側面の相互作用によって生じるか否かを,コネクショニスト・モデルを用いたコンピュータ・シミュレーションによって検討した。モデルは,類知覚的情報(イメージ鮮明度)と情動的情報(イメージ体験時の感情強度)が入力される層,現実感計算のための中間層,現実感出力層からなっていた。被験者が過去に体験した,最もネガティブあるいはポジティブな情動を喚起する場面をイメージさせ,評定させた鮮明度,感情強度,現実感(現実感出力層に与えられる教師信号)を入力し,学習の速度を指標としてモデルを評価したところ,中間層において類知覚的情報と情動的情報が相互作用しない場合に比べ,相互作用する場合の方が学習速度が速かった。また,ネガティブ・イメージを先に学習させるとポジティブ・イメージの学習が非常に困難になるという,臨床場面でよく観察される現象なども観察され,このことは,本モデルの妥当性の高さを示すものと考えられる。
