本研究の目的は米国の「ポリファミリー」の実態を、民族誌的手法を通して明らかにすることである。本年度は、ポリファミリーの社会的・歴史的背景に関する文献調査を行うとともに、米国カリフォルニア州ロサンゼルス市近郊においてフィールド調査を実施した。具体的には、米国における家族、フェミニズム運動、カウンター・カルチャーに関する研究の文献を読み進めた。フィールド調査では、「ポリアモリー」概念が誕生する以前より合意のある非一夫一婦の関係を築き、ポリアモリー・ムーブメントに初期より深く関わってきた人物を対象とした聞き取り調査と、現在ポリファミリーを形成している人々を対象としたライフヒストリーの収集を行った。前者の聞き取り調査では、近代ポリアモリーの小史をまとめた『米国におけるポリアモリーの五〇年』の著者2名に話を伺い、ポリアモリー・ムーブメントの変遷や米国におけるポリアモリーおよびポリファミリーの受容のされ方を考察する上で有意義な語りのデータを得ることができた。ポリファミリーを形成する人々を対象とした聞き取り調査からは、第一にポリアモリーおよびポリファミリーが経験する心理的・社会的葛藤、第二にかれらが自らの人生/日常において価値を置いていること、第三にポリアモラスな関係を築いている人びとが「家族」をどのようなものとして捉えているのか、に関する語りのデータを収集することができた。これらはファミリー構成員の緊張と社会規範、さらには規範に回収されないケアの三者の結びつきを考察する上で重要なデータであると言える。また、ライフヒストリーからは、過去に築いていた１対１のパートナーシップの経験や血縁親族との関係もかれらの理想の家族像や価値観を形成していることが示唆された。これらのデータをもとに、米国ポリファミリーの実態を分析すると同時に、本研究の一部を組み入れた単著の執筆を進めている。
