A study was conducted to investigate the lubricant behaviors in metal working. The purpose of the study was to gain a better understanding of evaluation of the lubricity of lubricant. The relationship among methods by means of fundamental testing machine, simulation testing machine and actual machine has been discussed. Consequently, it was found that the lubricity of lubricant should be evaluated by means of the methods which simulated the actual contact conditions in metalworking process and the contact conditions of the tool and the material in the testing machines should coincide with those between them of the actual machine. A new simulation testing machine was developed by the authors and the results obtained by means of this simulator were as follows;1) The eefect of the coefficient of friction and the friction pick up on working conditions were measured by using the newly developed simulating machine. The coefficient of friction decreased with increasing relative speed. The pick up occured when the speed and reduction were higher. The mechanism of pick up in lower speed was the cold welding type and the mechanism in higer speed was the heat adhesion type.2) The inlet oil film thickess was caluculated by Reynolds equation considering thermal effect and the calculated values were in good agreement with the measured.
