本研究の目的は、量的・質的方法を用いてガーナ農村部の学卒者を追跡調査し、十分な雇用がない環境における高学歴の若者のキャリア形成の実態を把握することである。プロジェクト１年目である2021年度は、対象大学の卒業を控えた最終学年生に対して、１度目の質問紙調査を実施した。回答者は全351名（うち、男性が219名、女性が131名、不明が1名）であった。調査の結果、卒業後の想定進路と、それに影響する要因が明らかとなった。プロジェクト2年目である2022年度には、１度目の質問紙調査の参加者のうち、39名を対象にフォーカスグループ（インタビュー）を実施し、質問紙の回答傾向を説明するような動機や理由について調査した。また、１度目の質問紙調査回答者に対する追跡の質問紙調査を実施した。1年目の質問紙調査とフォーカスグループのデータを合わせた分析結果から、ガーナ社会の不安定な労働市場に適応するために、学生らのキャリア形成が複線的になっていることを示した。卒業後最初の仕事としては公的セクターが就職先として想定される確率が高いものの、その門戸の狭さが前提として認識されているため、学生らにとって想定進路はあくまで暫定的で状況依存的なものである。また、NGOや民間セクター、自営業者など、「公的セクター以外」の職種をはじめから想定している集団は、それらの労働市場への参入可能性を向上させるためにより具体的な行動をとっており、キャリア形成への主体性がより高い傾向にあった。さらに本研究は、長期的には、多くの学卒者が「安定した雇用」よりも、自営業者としてより多い収入を得ることにより魅力を感じていることを示した。この分析結果を国内の複数の学会で報告し、意見交換を行った。
