近年、ツキノワグマにとって好適な環境（豊富な餌や隠れ場がある環境）が集落内に増え、それらを利用するクマと人間の軋轢が多発している。集落やその近辺でクマがどのように人間を回避し行動しているか、あるいはしていないのかといった、集落での詳細な利用形態に関する知見は、ツキノワグマと人間の軋轢を緩和するうえで重要な情報である。本研究では、夏季に集落を利用するツキノワグマの活動場所と休息場所の特徴、およびそれらを利用する時間帯を調べることで、クマの集落利用形態の詳細を明らかにすることを目的としている。当該年度は、昨年に引き続き集落近辺で活動するツキノワグマの休息場所と活動場所の特徴（隠蔽度・開空度、植生等）に関する調査を行った。集落近辺で活動しているツキノワグマは、昼夜を問わず比較的見通しが低い場所を選択していたが、とくに日中の休息場所で見通しが低かった。一方で、開空度の選択性は確認されなかった。これらの成果の一部は8月頃に国際誌に掲載される見込みである。さらに、集落周辺と山側で活動するクマの利用環境の比較も行った。その結果、山側で活動しているツキノワグマは立木や倒木、微地形等によって隠蔽度の低い地点を休息場として利用している一方で、集落で活動しているツキノワグマは集落内の段丘林や河畔林にあるマント群落やササなどの藪で休息していた。集落近辺でのツキノワグマの利用頻度を抑えるためには、こうしたマント群落やササ藪などの刈払いを行い、見通しを良くする必要性があると考えらえる。
