新型コロナウイルスの影響により、当初予定していた研究対象としていた地域在住高齢者をリクルートしての臨床研究が禁止されるようになった。そのため、当初予定から研究計画を修正せざるを得ない状況となった。したがって、2021年度から研究計画の修正と該当分野の調査を中心に活動し、2022年度は研究拠点である滋賀医科大学において実施されている研究である滋賀動脈硬化疫学研究で取得された地域在住中年および高齢者の大規模調査データを用いて、地域在住中年・高齢者の認知機能と肥満指標との関連性を調査することとした。認知症発症に関する先行研究では欧米人を対象に、肥満と認知症との関連性を調査した報告が散見され、肥満と認知症の関連性が認められている。しかし、やせ体型の者であっても認知症を発症することがある。また、我が国では、欧米と比較してBMI30以上の肥満体型の者が少ない。そのため、我が国における肥満指標と認知機能との関連性について大規模調査を実施することは、欧米と異なる我が国における認知機能低下防止につながる身体要因の解明の一助となる意義があると考える。本研究の重要性は、我が国における中年および高齢者の肥満指標と認知機能との関連性を明らかにすることで、認知機能の維持・向上に寄与する方略につながる可能性がある。2022年度は、研究拠点である滋賀医科大学において実施されている研究である滋賀動脈硬化疫学研究で取得された地域在住中年および高齢者地域在住中年・高齢者約800人の認知機能（Cognitive Abilities Screening Instrument）と各肥満指標（BMIやウエスト、ウエストヒップ比、ウエスト身長比など）の主要アウトカムを中心にデータ解析を実施した。
