ケニアのバリンゴ県の過疎地域において、野生ヒョウと人の関わりについて調査を継続中である。この地域に住んでいる人々は、牧畜を生業としているポコットの人々であり、民家は、互いの隣家までの距離が約１kmほど離れているのが通常である。本調査地では、ライオンが地域的に絶滅している可能性が高く、ヒョウは第一捕食書となっている。2022年度実施した住民への聞き取り調査で以下のような地域の様子が浮き彫りとなった。調査地では、新型コロナ感染症の影響と同時にひどい干ばつが地域を襲い、家畜の多くが飢えや疾患で死んだ。特に、ウシは影響を強く受け、人々は市場価格の高いウシを失うこととなった。やせ細った家畜は市場での価値が下がり買い手がつかなくなった。さらにウクライナ戦争の影響で石油価格が高騰したことに伴い、ケニア国内でも物価も上昇したことが重なり餓死者が出るような状況となった。生活が厳しい状況が依然として続いている。このような経済的にも生計的にも苦しい状態で、数が減少した家畜をヒョウに襲われることは、さらに厳しい状況に彼ら自身の生活がさらされることとなり、ヒョウに対する感情も以前に比べてより複雑なものになっていた。その一方で、現存している自然資源、環境を護っていかなければ、彼らが生業としている牧畜がなりたたないことを懸念する思いが、一部住民にあることは大きな発見であった。いかに現存している状況を維持していくべきなのか。厳しい干ばつに再度襲われたときに、どうしなければならないのかということについて、住民の中にも危機管理を意識した行動様式を考える傾向がある。自動撮影カメラの設置し、痕跡の追跡調査を実施してきた。GPS首輪の装着を計画中であり、ヒョウの行動を知ることで、人とのかかわりがより明らかになると考えており、今後のヒョウの保全および、人々の生業への影響を評価可能となり重要である。
