项目摘要

2022年度においては、バークリの言語説に関する検討が行われた。本研究の最終的な到達目標は、バークリの初期哲学と彼の道徳哲学がどのような関係にあるのかを明らかにすることだが、その予備作業として、バークリ哲学において、言葉の意味がどのように理解されるのかについての検討が行われた。というのも、上記の検討は、彼の哲学と道徳哲学をつなぐ重要な手掛かりになると想定されるからである。そこで、まず、バークリが大きな影響を受けつつおもな論敵としたロックの言語説とバークリのそれを比較検討し、さらに、それらの言語説と井筒俊彦の言語（とりわけ「言葉の内包的意味」）についての見解との異同を確認する作業が行われた。というのも、井筒は、言語の機能を論じる際に、バークリが指摘した「意味の使用説」的な言語観を紹介し、バークリ言語説の先駆性を高く評価するとともに、洋の東西を問わず、多様な言語論を吟味しつつ、様々な角度から言語の機能に関する分析を行っているからである。上記のような、人間の情念や行動を喚起させるという言葉の機能に注目する言語観は、バークリ道徳哲学を検討する際の重要な鍵になると考えられるが、言語行為論の創始者として知られるオースティンとほぼ同時期に「意味の使用説」的な言語観に注目し、多角的に言語の機能を検討した井筒の言語論との関連でバークリの言語説を検討することは、本研究の最終目標に到達するための有益な過程であると考えられる。なお、上記の着想は、小野純一（自治医科大学）との共同研究を通じて得られた。また、その成果は、主催者・澤井真（天理大学）によるThe International Conference on Reframing the Oriental Philosophy of Toshihiko Izutsu（2022年12月17日、国立民族学博物館）において発表された。
