フランスのルリユールは高度な金箔押し技術が発達したことで知られ、現在でも文学と芸術を橋渡しするべく一点制作をおこなう製本工芸家が少なからず活躍している。20世紀に至るまで読者は書店で仮綴本を購入し、製本工房に依頼して革装本に綴じ直すという文化が根づいてきた。本研究は19世紀および20世紀における書籍出版や読書、機械製本の発展を踏まえつつ、各国の工芸製本家がどのようにフランスの伝統的技法を受け継ぎ、それまでの理想とされてきた製本技術に改良を加え、本づくりを展開していったかを考察することを目標としている。本研究の初年度は、19世紀後半から20世紀初頭さらには20世紀後半を対象として、製本工芸家の執筆した技術書、各機関に残る著作物やアーカイブの調査を実施した。出版に対する価値観が変化し、過去のルリユールの劣化が明らかになる中で、工芸家がどのような書物観で制作に取り組んだかを分析することを企図している。製本技術書の所蔵館（海外図書館や美術館等）についてはヨーロッパ諸国の一覧をまとめた書誌学者G.ポラードによる先行研究が知られている。記述はフランス、ドイツ、イギリスを総覧するものだが、初期の技術書を対象としており18世紀以前が中心である。版元製本やクロス装幀が主流となる19世紀前半で終わっているため、それ以降の技術書を分析することが課題となっていた。本研究の初年度はこの課題を踏まえ、第一に各国の技術書や製本学校の手引書、製本工房の記録等について資料を収集することを目標とした。結果として新聞雑誌、講演録、展覧会カタログを含めて多方面に広がっていった製本工芸家の著作物を追うことになったが、20世紀後半の日本におけるルリユールの展開を追うことにもつながり、俯瞰的に工芸製本史を捉える視座を得ることができた。
