本研究課題は、20世紀初頭における古典名作『方丈記』の海外受容の一側面を明らかにすべく、1930年代初頭にイタリアの日本研究者ムッチョリ（Marcello Muccioli）により行われたこの作品の初のイタリア語訳を研究対象とするとともに、このイタリア語訳の更なる受容を追跡しながら、「世界文学」および「翻訳研究」の視点から日本の古典文学の国際的な展開の在り方を考察することを目指している。かかる研究目標のうち、研究計画初年度の令和３年度（2022年4月～翌年3月まで）には、以下の研究を実施した。まず、ムッチョリが『方丈記』を訳した1930年前後の彼の伝記的な情報および彼の日本古典文学への関心について情報収集を行った。並行して『方丈記』のイタリア語訳の序文を書いた帝国東北大学の教授であった山田孝雄（1873－1958）について富山市立図書館にある山田孝雄文庫にて資料調査を行い、山田のイタリアとの関係について文献調査を行った。これまでの調査から、山田は当時のイタリアで活躍した下位春吉など日本人を通してムッチョリと知り合い、『方丈記』のイタリア語訳の序文を書くことになったと思われる。また、山田孝雄と下位春吉の関係に関しては、イタリアに留学した日本の物理学者である田中館愛橘およびローマ字社から出版された雑誌「Romazi no Nippon」などを通して資料収集もおこなった。次に、このイタリア語訳の更なる受容を明らかにすべく、イギリスのモダニスト詩人バジル・バンティングのアダプテーション作品"Chomei At Toyama"を分析し、バンティングによる『方丈記』の理解についても調査中である。これまで得られた研究成果は、日本比較文学会や日本説話文学会にて口頭発表を行った。これから研究成果を研究論文としてまとめ、海外の学術誌への投稿を準備中である。
