本研究の目的は、単義性分析の問題点を改善した研究成果を発信することによって、単義性分析の発展に貢献することである。澤田 (2006: 309-310)では、Kratzer (1981, 1991, 2012)の可能世界意味論は、mustとhave toの違いを述べられないことを指摘している。つまり、単義性分析の問題点は、モダリティのシノニムの違いを説明できない点と解釈できる。2022年では、shouldとought toを考察対象として可能世界意味論と関連性理論の整合の実施を試みた。しかしながら、藤本 (2021)を参考にすると、shouldとought toの違いは微細なものであると筆者は考えた。should とought toの違いについて関連性理論における推論のステップで、どのように違いを述べられるか検討した。可能世界の量化の観点で考えると、必然性に該当する英語の助動詞を用いた研究は、文脈に着目すると、可能世界意味論と関連性理論の整合を明示的に示すことは難しいかもしれないと考えた。一方で、2022年ではGoda (2023)でmayを考察対象として可能世界意味論と言語行為の整合を行い、speech act worldsを提案した。英語の助動詞のシノニムでは「可能性(possibility)」に該当するモダリティに焦点を絞ると、より語用論的な用法の違いについてより明示的に示せると考えた。そこで、2023年の3月では英語の助動詞canを対象として研究を進め、インフォーマントチェックを行い、論文の執筆を行った。可能世界意味論と関連性理論を用いて考察し整合した。現在の状況では、canの意味形式まで示したので、論文を学会誌に投稿する予定である。
