これまでに調査を行ってきた動詞の中で、特にcostに焦点を当て、複数のコーパス（British National Corpus, Wordbanks Corpus）によって、実際に当該動詞が二重目的語表現において用いられている例の収集を行った。costが動詞として用いられている数万件の実例を調査した結果、cost二重目的語構文の例を各コーパスから多く（1,171例(BNC)、1,965例(Wordbanks)）得ることができた。それらの実例を分析すると、cost二重目的語表現の意味は「金銭/時間/労力を消費する」「得られるはずだった価値あるものを得損ねる（試合などに勝ちそこなう）」「損（ペナルティ）をこうむる」という３つのタイプに大きく分けることができた。これらの意味は、商取引フレーム（Fillmore 1977,1982, Fillmore and Atkins 1992　など）の、「商品を得る・金銭を支払う」という部分の解釈の仕方を変える（＝alternate construals（Langacker 1987））ことによって得られることがわかった。また、３タイプの意味のひとつひとつを他の二重目的語表現と比べてみると、それぞれがtake, lose/deny, bring/cause/earnなどを用いた二重目的語表現と共通した意味であることが観察できる。cost二重目的語表現は、他の二重目的語表現から考えれば一見大きくかけ離れた意味を表すようであり、二重目的語表現の中では例外として扱われてきた経緯があるが、これまで考えられてきたよりも意味に拡がりがあり、他の二重目的語表現と共通性をもつことが明らかになった。
