Toward a new history of Japanese language education in postcolonial Korea: Focusing on the 1950s through the 1980s

This research has examined the process through which the discourse on Japanese education has changed in the context of postcolonial Korea (1950-1970). Ideologies of language are not about language alone (Woolard, 1998), but are always socially situated and tied to questions of identity and power in societies. I focused on three different periods through which the ideology and practice of monolingualism was instituted in postcolonial Korea: 1) the 1950s, where the government equated anti-Japanese sentiment with nationalism; 2) the 1960s, where the public desired Japan as a form of modernity and 3) the 1970s, where the resumption of Japanese education in high schools were in accordance with the state policy on earning foreign capital through the tourism and sex industry.
