本研究の目的は近世ネーデルラントの80年戦争（1568-1648）における政治思想を、国家と教会の関係ないし政教関係というその中核的テーマのもとで理解することである。80年戦争は長らくオランダの独立戦争として認知されてきた戦争であり、本研究は実質的には近世オランダの政治思想といえるものを主な対象とする。オランダは17世紀に黄金時代を迎え、周知のように日本とも交流を始めた。そのような重要性にもかかわらず、これまでその政治思想はあまり研究対象に選ばれてこなかった。本研究はその空隙を埋める試みであった。本研究は遂行者の科研費の研究事業継続資格の喪失により、一年間のみ行われたものである。それゆえ、その成果のみを以下に示す。当初対象とする予定だった時期の主だった一次文献を読解し、同時期の政教関係の理論の大まかな流れをつかむことができた。さらに、二次文献を調査する中で、存在を予期していなかったような文献を見つけることもできた。従来、80年戦争の政治思想に関する英語圏のまとまった研究書はほとんど存在しなかった。それでも、その例外的に存在した研究書はオランダ人の手によるものだったので、非常の多くの一次文献を渉猟しているなどの特徴をゆうするものであり、重要な文献といえる。だが、やはり一冊の研究書で行えることには限界があり、重要な一次文献が軽微にしか扱われていないことも少なからずあった。他の言語圏でもまとまった研究書はあまり存在しないと見込んでいたが、新たに発見でき、新たな視点や活力を得られた。
