项目摘要

本研究はグロティウスの前期の政治思想を、主権論を主軸としながら、当時の文脈のもとで理解するものであった。三年目は、これまで扱ってきた2つの文脈の関係を確認するところから始めた。オランダ東インド会社は世界初の株式会社として知られることもあり、一見すると80年戦争と関係がないように思われるかもしれない。だが、オランダにとって、東インド会社は80年戦争でスペインに勝利するための道具として位置づけられ、グロティウスもそのように論じていた。2022年度の政治思想学会での報告において、この点を扱った。この国内問題と海外の問題が実は密接に関係していた点が本研究にとっては重要だった。3年目は、次に、1610年代のオランダにおける政教関係をめぐる対立と論争を扱った。1609年にスペインとオランダが休戦条約に至ると、オランダではスペインの外圧がなくなったため、亀裂が生じ、二大勢力が政教関係をめぐって対立し、内戦寸前にまで至った。グロティウスはその一方の勢力の有力政治家として活躍したが、この勢力が敗北したので、彼も逮捕され投獄された。その過程の中で彼が一通り執筆し、最終的には死後出版された『主権論』に着目した。その本では、国内の政教問題による不和や分裂の危機を乗り越えるために主権論を展開するという、当時の他の国でもみられたような理論展開がみられた。同時に、主権論によって、政教関係を軸として海外拡張を正当化するような理論構造も確認できた。ただし、グロティウスが後者の側面を意図的に作り出したのかという点については、現時点では確たる結論に至れなかった。当時の文脈を考慮すれば、彼が意図的に生み出したといえるようにも思われるが、十分な証拠が得られるまでには至っていない。
