Exit Strategy of UN Peacekeeping Operations and the Effects on Sustainable Peace

While consideration of interdependencies among conflict management efforts have been overlooked in the extant research, understanding multiple missions is required to promote a holistic understanding of peace operations. To examine the exit strategy of UN PKO, first, this year’s research investigated why UN Peacekeeping Operations (UN PKOs) are replaced by UN Political Missions (UN PMs). Based on the theoretical arguments, the paper tested hypotheses using data on the deployment of UN PKOs and UN PMs in post-civil war countries between 1993 and 2016. The paper provides implications about conditions under which the replacement may be compatible with demand of host state as well as the role of UN to serve public goods while minimizing political conflicts within the supply side of UN PKO.
