Co-designing a health promotion campaign for the improvement of peri-urban water, sanitation and hygiene in Lusaka, Zambia

The first year of the project focused on: 1) survey site visits, and 2) identification of participants and stakeholders, and 3) pilot studies for confirmation, review and modifications of methodology and data collection tools. A brief description of each of these is given below:1: Four possible research sites have been selected in Lusaka Province for the study; two peri-urban settlements in Lusaka City and two in Kafue Town. These were selected in collaboration with research counterparts in Lusaka (Chawama Youth Project, Dziko Langa Club, University of Zambia).2: Stakeholders in the research sites (municipal staff, community representatives, school principals, and children and youth) were visited to share the concept of the project. In addition, the research concept was presented to attendees at the Zambia Water Forum and Exhibition (July 14-16, 2022) in Lusaka. Contact details for other water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) stakeholders were collected future research collaboration.3: Research tools were piloted in one Lusaka based research site. The first stage of our action research methodology with children and youth was also piloted. Participants assessed their communities, and identified problems with community WASH. However, they had difficulties in development and implementation of interventions.
