项目摘要

本研究は20世紀初頭のイギリスにおいて日本の柔術を実践した女性たちについて、教育史的な分析行うことを目的としている。3年計画の初年度である2022年度はまず時代背景と先行研究の検討を行った。その結果、教育を含む当時の女性の活動の各所に柔術実践の痕跡が確認されたが、まとまった一次史料は存在しないことも判明した。加えて、最も先行研究の多いEdith Garrudについて国内で入手可能な情報を収集した。オンライン・データベースのある新聞記事などの一次史料、一般書、インターネット上の情報など広範な史料を検討した結果、Garrudですら一次史料は限られており、どの二次史料もほぼ同じ一次史料を論拠としていること、歴史家ではない著者による真偽不明の情報も多く流布していることがわかった。以上の内容の詳細と今後の調査方針に関する具体案をまとめ、研究ノートとして『共生科学研究』に投稿し、採録された。以上の予備調査を踏まえて3月下旬から4月初旬に現地調査を行った。柔道/武術研究者のCardiff大学Paul Bowman、柔道史家のHertfordshire大学Michael Callan、女性柔道家の研究があるDe Montfort大学Amanda Spenn-Callan、および教育史家のUCL Insitute of EducationのGary McCullochに面会し、意見交換を行った。また、Gurradに関する新情報を求め、British Library, Hammersmith & Fulham Local History Archive, Women's Library (LSE Library), Richard Bowen (Judo) Collection (Bath大学), Islington Local History Centreで史料調査を実施した。
