本研究の目的は人口減少地域において復興あるいは創出された巡礼地を対象に、巡礼ツーリズムの高まりによる「霊場空間」の再編を明らかにすることである。本年度は、（1）巡礼ツーリズムの発展の歴史的経緯を刊行図書や新聞記事等を資料として通時的に分析する、（2）関係する巡礼地を現地調査し、観光資源化にともなう「霊場空間」の再編の特徴を検討することを目的とした。本年度の研究について、（1）では関連資料の収集および分析の結果、第一に1980年代以降に観光・レジャーの高まりやモータリゼーションの進展を背景に地方巡礼を対象とした案内書籍が増加し、その後も継続的に刊行されていたこと、第二に1990年代半ばごろから西日本を中心に特定人物（仕掛け人）によって多数の巡礼地が創出され、またこれら巡礼地と巡礼者を結びつける案内書籍が数多く刊行されたことの2点が明らかになった。（2）では、千葉県、島根県、長野県等の巡礼地を対象に、関係者への聞き取りや景観観察、図書館への資料収集等を精力的に行った。調査先のひとつである千葉県では近年の「御朱印めぐり」ブームを活用し、「外からの参拝者」の誘導を図ることで、地域活性化や社寺運営の維持を試みていたこと、また「御朱印めぐり」の巡礼先に比較的規模の大きな施設（札所）を選定することで、そこから周辺の小規模な施設への参拝誘導を図る仕組みを作り上げていたことが明らかとなった。以上の成果のうち、（1）は現在論考を執筆中である。（2）は関連する調査結果を2022年人文地理学会大会にて発表するとともに、現在論考を執筆中である。また、観光関係の事典において「サステナブルツーリズム」の項目を担当し、観光による持続可能な社会のあり方を論究した。
