We have shown that major platelet adhesion and activation pathways orchestrate inflammation and leukocyte recruitment to the alveolar space in the course of experimental Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). Furthermore, platelets also critically contribute to the immune response during an infectious insult and they influence the extent of secondary organ injury during ARDS. The regeneration of the lung and the resolution of inflammation following inflammation or infection are also influenced by platelets. We plan to further dissect the molecular mechanisms underlying platelet-orchestrated immune processes and the regeneration of the lung during ARDS. For this, we will utilise a broad range of genetically modified mouse models, infectious models of ARDS and advanced imaging methods.
