Modern bins are often designed as ring-stiffened circular cylindrical shells. The load-increasing effect of narrow ring stiffeners under axial pressure has received little attention in research to date. However, until now it has been unregulated and as a result of unnecessarily high use of materials, steel bins are denied market share and better sustainability.In order to increase competitiveness, design rules are to be derived by means of a three-phase work package, starting with a series of small tests (three series, each with three identical test bodies) for a well-documented basis for numerical studies. The choice of test specimens is based on structurally typical structures of high slenderness. In the second phase, these experiments are recalculated and a numerical calculation model is derived and calibrated. On the basis of this verified model, the experimental findings will be extended in the third phase by means of parameter studies to a multitude of further geometry parameters and finally an engineering model will be derived. By using this engineering model, the practicing engineer can easily account for the load-increasing effect of the ring stiffeners under axial pressure and contribute to the better sustainability of steel.
