本研究は昨年度に引き続き、感性的装置としての記念物を専ら主題としてとりあげた。まず美術館制度と記念物制度について、それらの西欧的な起源を尋ね、それらがどのような思想的背景のもとに作られたのかを確かめた。これによって、近代国家の中で我々の美的鑑賞の場所としての美術館が特権化されるとともに、かつての地域の記憶を司っていた記念物的存在がその記念物性を剥奪され、一方では美術作品や歴史資料として美術館や博物館に収蔵・陳列され、他方では国民国家の歴史=記憶創出のための道具として一般教育に用いられた過程が明らかにされた。しかしながら、そうした公権力による使用にのみ記念物が奉仕したわけではない。記念物はかつて公共的空間を飾った建造物をのみ指すのではなく、より広く出版物、放送物の中に浸透し、さまざまな神話作用を依然として行使している。ただし、そのありかたは隠蔽された形であって、必ずしも我々の公共の福祉に与り、我々の社会共同体を復活させる仕方ではない。肝心なのは、ここで偽の記念物に依拠しないことである。巨大な公共建築に代表される偽の記念物は露骨に自己の存在や主張を顕示するが、それは近代社会においては美術館でのみ許される行為である。それはそれで近代の成果であるところの美術館において行えばよい。ただし我々は美術館的空間を拡張することができる。再評価すべきは、造形芸術活動なのであり、これを従来のように単純に鑑賞される展示物を作成する活動として見做すのではなく、より積極的に協同作業の場所を形成する活動として捉えるならば、造形芸術は自らの失った記念物性を回復するとともに、美的な経験も、社会生活の中に再び重要なものとしてその処を得るであろう。
