1 青年期に見られる自己愛的な気持ち(自愛心self-love)と自己嫌悪感との関連が明らかにされた。(i)傷つくことから自己を守ろうとする自己愛的な気持ちの強さ,そして(ii)自分に高い要求水準を課し,自己に対して理想主義的に完全主義を求める自己愛的な気持ちの強さが,逆に青年に自己嫌悪感を感じさせていた。2 自己愛的な気持ちの中には,今の自分に満足しているという自己肯定的な気持ちも含まれているが,この気持ちが強い場合には,青年は自己嫌悪感を感じずにすむ。3 自己愛という概念を整理した結果,防衛的な意味あいでの自己愛は自己嫌悪感と関連していた。続いて,自分を肯定的に評価し,価値づけ認めるという意味での自己愛を検討する必要が生じた。そこで,自己価値(self-worth)と自己嫌悪感の両面から,青年期から成人期にかけての人格発達を明らかにした。大学生以降,まず自己嫌悪感が低くなり,その後で次の段階として自己価値が高くなるという変化が,年齢的にあるいは社会的に発達するにつれて生じてくる。4 以上のことより次のような心理学的事実が明らかになった。青年は自己愛的であるために,あるいは今の自己を肯定できないために,自己嫌悪感を感じている。しかし,年齢を重ね,職に就き,やがて結婚することを通して,自己嫌悪感は感じられなくなり,代わって自己の価値を認められるようになっていく。
