本研究は、韓国南部の新羅・伽耶の故地にあたる6ヶ所の古墳群および出土人骨を対象として考古学的・人類学的分析を行い、古墳時代社会の考察を行ったものである。その結果は、金海礼安里古墳群を築造したのは階層性より双系的親族関係が優先する集団であり、金海地域の首長層墓と想定される大成洞古墳群や良洞里古墳群でも同様な群構造が認められることから、ランクの上下を問わず同じ原理によっていた可能性が高いことが明らかとなった。林堂古墳群においては、複数埋葬の事例が追葬によるものであり、竪穴式墓においても複数埋葬が確認されることを指摘した。池山洞古墳群の分析では、「殉葬」として扱われてきた古墳が、殉葬されたものとは考えにくいこと、墳丘土層断面の状況から、むしろ小墳丘の集合体であった可能性を指摘して、被葬者が首長とその親族である可能性を考えた。咸安道項里古墳群の分析では、まず縦穴系横口式石室の入口部の可能性を考え、1号人骨の膝蓋骨が動かされていた事実と、日本の事例との比較から、死後の葬送儀礼である可能性を考え、殉葬説の矛盾を指摘した。東海市湫岩洞B地区の分析では、埋葬プロセスを復元して、複数埋葬が殉葬などによるものではなく、順次追葬されたものであることを明らかにした。金海柳下里古墳では、6世紀末から7世紀に築造された横穴式石室墓で、追葬によって9体の人骨が順次埋葬されたものであることを明らかにした。これらを踏まえ、竪穴式墓段階から既に複数埋葬が習俗として存在し、それを前提とした横穴式の墓制が採用されたこと、複数埋葬が殉葬ではなく、追葬によるものであること、埋葬プロセスの検討から複数埋葬の被葬者が二世代に及ぶことがあることなどを論じた。そして、新羅・伽耶地域の古墳社会が双系的親族関係に基づき、首長の親族からの突出が弱いこと、6〜7世紀段階でもなお家父長制家族の成立をみないだろうという社会像を得た。
