本研究の目的は、極小理論(Chomsky、1995)の枠組みで言語習得のしくみを明らかにすることにある。本年度は日本人英語学習者の主格および対格の使用についてデータを集め、Wakabayashi(1997)のモデルを検証してきた。英語の代名詞格の第二言語習得についての研究はほとんどない。本研究では2種類のデータ収集を行った。1種類は、日本人英語学習者約50人の発話データである。ここでは、代名詞格の誤りはごく初期に少数しか見られなかった。もう1種類は、英語を習いはじめたばかりの中学1年生23人による文法性判断タスクである。このデータから1)「彼が彼女が好きだ」のように、与えられた日本語の目的語に主格助詞「が」が使用されている場合、「彼が彼女を尊敬している」「彼が彼女を好きだ」など、与えられた日本語文の目的語に対格「を」がついている場合と比較すると、He likes she のように、目的語に主格代名詞を使用した文を正しいと判断する場合が多いこと、2)動詞の種類に変わらずHim likes her のように、主語も目的語も対格で表したものを正しいと判断する場合があることがわかった。1、2)の誤りは、それぞれ、転移による誤り、および、発達的誤りであると考えられるが、Schwartz&Sprouse(1994)、Vainikka&Young-Scholten(1994)、Eubank(1994)らのモデルでは両方を説明することは不可能であり、Wakabayashi(1997)のモデルではそれが可能であることも明らかにされた。研究成果の発表は現在準備中である。
